Types of Referrals

A referral is not required to see a Psychologist.

However, there are many referral options available which may provide rebates and assist with the cost of sessions.

A practitioner guide has been created to assist Referrers and clients to select the best matched Clinical Psychologist to meet your needs. The guide may be found here.

A number of referral pathways are available at Cassidy Psychology. Please read the options below to see which referral options may suit you or your family. If you are unsure as to which referral is most suited to you, please contact the practice and we can assist you with understanding and obtaining the most suitable referral.

Medicare Mental Health Care Plans

The most common form of referral to our practice is the Mental Health Care Plan. This plan is completed by your GP and allows you to an initial 6 individual sessions and 10 group sessions of Psychological treatment with Medicare rebates.  Upon completion of the initial 6 individual sessions, and following a successful Review with your GP, you could receive another 4 sessions of individual psychological treatment (i.e. total of 10 sessions per calendar year).

Your GP will determine your eligibility for this plan. Should you wish to discuss this with your GP, please ensure that you book a long consultation.

Although a Medicare rebate can be claimed, there is generally a gap fee involved.

Medicare Chronic Disease Management

GP’s can provide a total of 5 sessions to people managing a chronic illness with a chronic disease management plan. Your GP will determine your eligibility for this plan. Should you wish to discuss this with your GP, please ensure that you book a long consultation.

Although a Medicare rebate can be claimed, there is generally a gap fee involved.

Private referrals and Private Health Funds

Clients may also present privately, with no referral from a GP or medical professional.

There is no limit to the number of sessions you may have as a private client, however, Medicare rebates are not available.

Please check with your private health fund as they may offer rebates for Psychological Services under ‘Extras’.

Workers Compensation and Work Cover

If you have been injured at work or in the course of carrying out your work, you may require the services of a Psychologist as part of your recovery.

Your GP can make a referral under this scheme. A claim number must be provided at the time of the initial appointment.
